Behind the designs of the Artistry Collection

The delicate illustrations adorning the Artistry Collection reflect the creativity and fragrance design at the heart of the collection. Designer Philippa Steele tells us about the inspirations and techniques used to create the unique, hand-illustrated designs.

What’s your history with Ashleigh & Burwood?

I’ve been working at Ashleigh & Burwood since 2014, starting out as a Junior Designer, straight from university. My time at the company has allowed me to practice many aspects of design and I now work as a Designer within the New Product Development Team. 

What were the inspirations behind the artwork for the Artistry Collection?

The inspiration behind each artwork is always the fragrance itself. The product development team brainstormed and we all came up with the original concept together. We wanted to keep some photographic element to the design, but combine it with a more personable and trend-led illustrative touch.

What feel did you want to bring to the collection with the artwork?

We wanted to have a kind of playful colourfulness to make it eye-catching, but also give it a grown up, sophisticated and unique style. I think that the different layers and textures of the design appeal to the senses, evoking the sense of smell as much as a visual representation can.

How did you create the artwork?

They were created using pencils and the computer. It’s hand drawn outline sketches combined with photography and splashes of watercolour. It’s quite a unique combination.

Had you any experience with this style of design beforehand?

I’ve always loved art and have been drawing and sketching my whole life. But combining the sketches with photography this way is something I have never done or really seen the process of it being done before, so it was a very interesting and fun challenge.

Do you have a favourite and why?

That’s like making me choose a favourite child! I love them all equally!

Trend Report: Out of this world…

Our love of space goes all the way back to ancient times, when the Greeks mapped out the constellations of the night sky, and as the excitement over this month’s ‘supermoon’ shows, our passion for the astronomical continues today. The moon isn’t the only celestial body holding our interest, continued exploration of Mars has made headlines throughout 2016. Meanwhile, advancements like British astronaut Tim Peake’s six month-long stay at the International Space Station earlier this year makes the crossing of the ‘final frontier’ seem closer than ever.

However, for the moment we earthbound folk are content to get our space-fix wherever we can. Out of this world tales are currently filling the silver and small screens, and we’re even wearing our starry dreams on our sleeves, as designs emblazoned with celestial details parade down the runway, while clothes featuring NASA’s iconic logo have made a splash on the high street.

Space’s influence has also made its way into our homes, inspiring clean, futuristic interior design schemes, galactic prints and zodiac wall art. A simple way to add a subtle touch of the cosmic, several of our glittering Mosaic Fragrance Lamps also have interstellar inspirations behind their designs.
