It’s official, Christmas is on. We know, we know, it seems to begin earlier and earlier each year, but it really is well and truly on now. Don’t believe us? Just glance out of your window and gaze in wonderment at the Christmas lights which have popped up on the high street. When were they put up? No one knows. They simply appear each year. Take a look at the shops, too. They’re filling! Christmas shoppers, pop-up Christmas sections, they’re all there. This divides the nation into two sides. There’s the first, those who roll their eyes and point out that “bonfire night is barely over”, and the second, who instinctively break into a chorus of “I don’t want a lot for Christmas…” at the first sight of a bauble.
It’s official, we’re in the fiery depths of autumn, and from the looks of things, there’s no going back anytime soon. The wind’s blowing, the leaves are golden, suddenly an umbrella has become something we can’t leave the house without “just in case”, but it’s time to embrace it! That’s right, we’re immersing ourselves in all things autumn, and do you know what? It’s not all that bad! Snuggly blankets, all the reality TV you could possibly watch, and even better – the perfect excuse to get crafty! With Halloween just around the corner, there are plenty of little ways to prep your home for the season!
The nights are drawing in, it’s all getting a little bit more chilly and there is nothing more appealing than switching your night out in silly shoes and a dress you can’t really walk in for a night in with your slippers and joggers – it’s just a little too grey to step foot outside, or get too dressed up after a busy day!
So here are my 10 steps to the perfect Autumn night in to help ease you into these chilly evenings!
The Tonka bean. The flat, wrinkled legume from South America that so often goes undeservedly unnoticed. Well, we at Ashleigh & Burwood think our fragrant friend has gone unnoticed for too long and want to give you the low down on the scentsational bean we’ve come to know and love.
The bedroom. Your sanctuary. The place you go to unwind in. Where you awake after a good night’s rest and relax after a hard day’s work. The room in your home most reflective of your own style and taste. And of course, where the magic happens… sleep.
It’s the room of contradictions. It’s where you require tranquillity and solitude. When the door shuts, it doesn’t just shut out the hallway, it shuts out the world. It’s also where you require a screeching warning siren called an “alarm” to alert you that a new day has begun. As if you didn’t know already, the dog’s been licking your face since 6am and you’ve been plotting revenge on the birds for singing ever since.
You’ll always find me in the kitchen at parties. Mostly because that’s where they’re usually held. Gone are the days when kitchens were used exclusively for cooking, their function purely practical, oh no, we’re now living in the dawn of the trophy kitchen.
This doesn’t mean that we’re no longer using kitchens in the practical sense; it means that the kitchens practicality has expanded. The kitchen is often combined with the living room or dining room (or both), forming an open ‘living space’ rather than just ‘the kitchen’. This living space often acts as the heart and soul of the house, the go-to room where family and guests alike naturally gather.
